In a career spanning over 20 years, Lothar Matthäus established himself as one of the best box-to-box midfielders ever. Feared and revered in equal measure, his dominating performances propelled West Germany to World Cup glory in 1990.
After 5 seasons with Borussia Mönchengladbach, he joined Bayern Munich in 1984 winning the Bundesliga 3 times and the DFB-Pokal. A switch to Italy with Internazionale in 1988 paid immediate dividends with Scudetto and Supercup trophies in his first season.
Serie A success was a precursor to World Cup glory at Italia ‘90 where Matthäus lifted the trophy as captain. At 5 World Cups he amassed 25 appearances; a record which still stands today and, with a total of 150 caps, he remains the most capped German player of all time.
Upon re-joining Bayern Munich in 1992 he added a further 4 Bundesliga titles, another UEFA Cup and an additional DFB-Pokal to his glittering résumé. Diego Maradona said of Matthäus, "He is the best rival I've ever had. I guess that's enough to define him." And maybe it is.
The king of Kings commemorates a legend in breathtaking style with a premium K-leather upper, gold numbered sign-off on the heel counter, 25th anniversary heel tab, luxurious leather lining and sockliner with German flag stitching detail and a golden tongue calling out his World Cup honours.
