Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick as Liverpool beat Middlesbrough in an open game at Anfield to move fourth in the Premiership.
The away team started well and took a surprise early lead when Tuncay timed his run well to move unchallenged through Liverpool's shocking offside trap and nod in Downing's free-kick.
Aliadiere was threatening the Liverpool back-four with his constant running and pace. A last-ditch Alvaro Arbeloa tackle on the Boro striker stopped him breaking clear on the Reds goal.
Liverpool were then fortunately gifted an equaliser when Julio Arca headed back towards his own goal and the ball went straight to the grateful Torres, wearing Nike football boots who capitalised on the error by equalising.
Torres quickly added a second goal when he picked up the ball and powered a low shot into the bottom corner.
Boro refused to give in and continued to attack and Tuncay, wearing his adidas football boots was then booked for putting the ball into the back of the net with his arm.
But Liverpool continued their attacking play in a open game and a cross-field pass brought Schwarzer rushing out of his goal to the edge of the box but Torres got to the ball first ahead of the Australian keeper and defender David Wheater before placing the ball into an empty net.
Liverpool looked to have wrapped the game up but Boro got their second when Downing, wearing his adidas football boots beautifully controlled the ball and cut into the box from the left before putting the ball through the keepers legs.
Liverpool held onto their 3-2 victory with the help of Aliadiere after the striker was sent off for gently slapping Javier Mascherano round the face, who appeared to provoke him by pinching the striker's nose.
The win was only Liverpool's second in the league in 2008.
"Fernando was really aware and ready and scored when they made mistakes. Rafael Benitez said.
"He has scored 21 goals this season which is really good in his first season with the club and he is enjoying his time here.
"It was an important game for us after our Champions League game.
"But we are now in the top four and we have a game in hand so we are in a good position."
